Good morning,everyone!

It's a great pleasure to see you all again.First of all, welcome to the first lecture of the Footsteps Between China and Africa series, which will be followed by training for Confucius Institute teachers.

As you may know, each training session will be divided into two parts from today onwards:a keynote lecture and training on Chinese proficiency and teaching skills. While helping you improve your Chinese language ability and teaching skills,we also hope to share with you the achievements and experiences in China-Zimbabwe exchanges to date.

We believe that education acts as a bridge connecting different cultures and hearts.Through this bridge, we can learn from each other and achieve common progress.I hope everyone will participate actively and share your insights.May this training become an important milestone in your professional development.

Today,it's my great honor to introduce our speaker,Mr.Zhao Ke,President of the China-Zimbabwe Exchange Centre and one of the founders of the Zimbabwe Chinese Business Association and the Zimbabwe Chinese Federation.Since 1996,he has been deeply rooted in Zimbabwe for nearly three decades, using culture as a vessel to build bridges of friendship between China and Africa. He founded

the Zimbabwe Dream Show, established the China-Zimbabwe Friendship Scholarship, and promoted the Zimbabwe youth art troupe's tour to China. He has consistently upheld his original aspiration of serving as "a bridge, messenger, and volunteer of friendship between the two peoples."

Now,let us welcome Mr.Zhao Ke to share with us "Sailing the Vast Africa Continent on a Cultural Vessel:My Thirty Years in Zimbabwe."

Thank you,Prof Li.Your generous introduction makes me a little nervous with so many titles. But the title I hope to earn most is "Cultural Ambassador for China and Zimbabwe,or China and Africa".That is what I truly wish to be.

Before I start,I'd like to say this is not exactly a formal lecture, but more of a sharing session.I want to talk about three core concepts of Chinese culture.

Since many of you are teachers of Chinese,I'd also love to hear your perspectives on China. If you ask me about the power of native culture,I can share my ideas, but first, let's talk about your understanding of China.

I think one key idea to understand China is harmony between heaven, earth and humanity---it means people, nature and all living things live in harmony with one another.Let me sum up three core values: respect for family, respect for elders, and integrity.Integrity is extremely important;it means being trustworthy.Interestingly, these three values are also the core of Zimbabwe culture.People in Zimbabwe hold the same beliefs.

When I visit the Balancing Rocks Park in Zimbabwe,I see profound meaning behind those stacked stones. Many Chinese may think the rocks were piled up manually, but they are naturally formed. This

represents balance. In my view, nature has shaped Zimbabwe's culture in this way.People here strive to maintain balance and harmony in allaspects of life.

This spirit of harmony runs through political exchanges and economic cooperation.Zimbabwe is also an inclusive society, and integrity underpins mutual trust. The Chinese people are friendly, and we are glad to see Zimbabwe embracing new development opportunities, especially in tourism. The potential for cooperation across the region is truly remarkable.

I also deeply feel the power of family culture in China.Chinese people maintain close ties with cousins and extended relatives from all over the country. If someone loses a sibling, they will immediately take responsibility for supporting their sibling's family. When I worked in Maputo,I met a 25-year-old young man who said he needed to pay for his son's high school tuition.I was confused and asked how his son could already be 18 years old.He explained that the boy was actually his sister's son. This is exactly the embodiment of traditional family values.

In short, the family values cherished by Chinese people and Zimbabweans are largely the same.We all cherish the gifts that nature brings us.

Arrival in Zimbabwe

As Prof Li mentioned,I arrived in Zimbabwe on October 1st,1996---China's National Day.I traveled a long way by plane and even celebrated two National Days in one day.It is an unforgettable experience in my life.

Thirty years ago,I was 28,a young man.Now I am 58.These three decades have changed me a lot:my artistic pursuits,my mindset,my skills, and even my name. When I first came here,my English teacher gave me the English name "Si". My Chinese given name is "Ke",which means "scientist"in Chinese. My parents hoped I would grow up to be a scientist, but they never imagined I would travel across oceans to settle in Africa.

Later,I gave myself a shorter nickname, which is well-known among local people. Some people even posted my photos on social media, joking that Chinese people do not want to return home and even change their names. This two-word nickname is like my personal totem.

Totems also exist in Chinese culture.China has the Chinese Zodiac, with twelve animals representing people born in different years.I was born in the Year of the Monkey,so monkey is also part of my identity. My surname Zhao ranks among the most common surnames in China.I also use the name "Zivanayi",which I created myself. It means "we know and understand each other"---to me,this is a perfect name that embodies cultural communication.

Today,I want to share my thirty years of experience in Africa, especially in Zimbabwe. To be honest,I feel a bit nervous talking to all of you teachers.Although I dreamed of becoming a teacher back in high school,I did not prepare my speech strictly according to the PPT,so my sharing may differ from the slides.

What I am going to talk about is closely related to all of you Confucius Institute teachers. We are engaged in cross-cultural research and communication, which is an essential way to connect different nations.

Why I Chose Africa

Let me start with my personal story:why did I come to Zimbabwe?

I was born in 1968.I witnessed China's economic reform starting in the 1980s.During that period,China began to revive traditional culture along with economic development.A popular writer sparked my interest in Africa when I was stillin high school.

Almost every Chinese person knows San Mao,a famous novelist. She married a husband of Portuguese and Spanish descent, lived in Taiwan, and traveled extensively across Africa, especially the Sahara Desert and countries like Mauritania. After reading her books about Africa,I made up my mind that Africa was a continent I had to visit in my life.

I got my chance in 1996.My brother-in-law worked for a Chinese state-owned enterprise in Zimbabwe, and he invited me here for a holiday.China's National Day holiday lasted three days, and I took another three days off, making a six-day trip in total.

When I landed in Zimbabwe on October 1st,1996,jacarandas were in full bloom. The scenery was breathtaking, just like paradise.Back then, climate change was not as severe as it is today, and the environment was wonderful. The land reform had not yet started. There were many local white residents and people of Indian descent, while only about 200 Chinese people lived here at that time.

I was deeply attracted by this diverse cultural environment. From the very first hour I set foot on Zimbabwe's land,I decided to stay here.

Early Days in Zimbabwe

I lived on King George Road in Avondale, which is now a food court.I shared an apartment with my brother-in-law.Nearby stood Avondale Shopping Centre and the George Hotel, which had karaoke bars and live music performances every weekend. The hotel closed down around 2003 or 2004 and was later rebuilt into office buildings.

I loved going to the Italian ice cream shop in Avondale Shopping Centre, and I often visited the George Hotel.I still remember the leader of a local band named Brian.Thirty years ago, there were only around 200 Chinese people in Zimbabwe,so we were as rare as giant pandas.Locals would greet us warmly and call us "pandas".They were used to seeing white people and people from India,so they treated Chinese people with great kindness.

The local police were also very friendly to us.They saluted Chinese people and spoke highly of Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou Enlai, sharing many stories about China.I often interacted with the band members at the hotel. On weekends,I went to their cottages, where they taught me to play African drums. That was my first experience of Africa's rich multiculturalism.

I spent nearly every weekend sitting by the window of the ice cream shop, reading books about Africa and culture, and making new friends.I fell in love with Africa from those early days.

Cultural Immersion:Understanding and Integration

We always say that culture is the key to understanding a nation or a continent.I have always told diplomats and overseas Chinese that for Chinese people coming to Zimbabwe and Africa, culture should come first, followed by economic cooperation.Nowadays, however, many people put the economy ahead of culture, which is putting the cart before the horse.

Over thirty years in Zimbabwe,I have gained a deep understanding of local culture. As we discussed earlier, three core words summarize Zimbabwean culture:harmony, inclusiveness and respect.

In my early years here,I was not fully occupied with work.On weekends and holidays,I often traveled to rural areas. Those villages had no electricity or running water.I slept on floors paved with cow dung, listening to elderly locals tell traditional stories of Zimbabwe.Lying in the fields and looking up at the sky,I learned countless things from the local people.

Zimbabwe's culture is unique. With nearly 200 years of British colonial history, local traditions have blended with British culture, forming a diverse multicultural society. This is quite different from China, where we have maintained our traditional culture more completely.

I have great respect for Zimbabwe's family culture.Chinese people sometimes joke when they hear local customs:"Why do you keep attending funerals?Didn't you lose one of your parents just last month?"

In China,we have complicated kinship titles for uncles, aunts and cousins.Even my daughter struggles to tell apart different senior relatives. But in Zimbabwe, people call all elder female relatives "mother"and all elder male relatives "father".Younger relatives are addressed as "son"or "daughter".This cultural difference often causes misunderstandings between Chinese and Zimbabweans.

Learning about this custom helped me understand Zimbabwe's family and community culture.Cross- cultural communication requires such understanding, because culture is the foundation of cooperation between two nations.Without cultural mutual understanding, many forms of cooperation cannot run smoothly.

Many Chinese company owners complain that their local employees refuse to work on weekends, especially Sundays,to go to church. This is also a cultural and religious difference. Some Chinese people believe in Buddhism and other religions, while I myself converted to Christianity in 2015.

According to Christian beliefs,Sunday is the Lord's Day,a day for worship.Local employees will not work on Sundays even for overtime pay,not because they are lazy, but because of their faith.I always advise Chinese employers to respect this tradition and let employees attend church.

Funeral customs are another obvious difference.Traditionally,Zimbabwean funerals can last up to a month.Relatives carry the deceased's body to visit the homes ofall immediate family members.Locals believe that skipping a relative's funeral will bring bad luck to oneself and future generations.I once had a strong employee who suddenly fell ill.Later I learned he was unwell because he had not attended his aunt's funeral.

In China,we also have some traditional beliefs that cannot be fully explained by science, but our funeral customs are different. We can hold rituals and pray at home instead of attending every funeral in person. These cultural differences must be recognized and respected.

The world is a global village.Zimbabwe has a population of about 12 to 13 million, while China has 1.4 billion. Many Zimbabweans choose to work and live in South Africa, the UK and other countries for a

better life.People have the basic human right to move freely across borders. What truly matters is not the number of immigrants, but what they contribute to the local community.

After Zimbabwe's land reform in 2000,China became the largest source of overseas investment and technology transfer for Zimbabwe. We have also launched a large number of vocational training programs for local people.

We all uphold the concept of people-to-people bond. When we share resources, technology, capital and markets with each other,we can truly build a global village.

My dream of promoting cultural exchanges began to take shape in 2000,a pivotal year for China-Africa relations. The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was irst held in Beijing that year. Before that, Western media had painted a one-sided negative image of Africa, portraying it as a land plagued by drought, food shortages and civil wars.

The opening of the World Cup recently has shown us the charm of cultural integration.People from all over the world cheer together for peace. We are tired of wars, colonial rule and disrespect. We all long for a truly harmonious global village.

Building Bridges:Cultural Exchange in Practice

The biggest barrier between nations is mutual misunderstanding.People do not understand why Chinese people come to Zimbabwe, just as we may not fully understand why Zimbabweans go to other countries. Cultural exchange is the only way to bridge this gap.

I met a journalist from a major Western media outlet in 2004.He told me frankly that his newsroom never published positive stories about Zimbabwe.Reporters were paid high bonuses for negative headlines,so many journalists had to write biased reports to support their families.

Fortunately, social media platforms like TikTok have opened a new window for the world.I am now mainly engaged in tourism. We have launched cross-border tourist routes covering Namibia,Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.Africa is home to stunning natural scenery, and more and more travel bloggers share the beauty of Africa with the world through short videos. This greatly promotes cross-cultural communication.

Based on my decades of experience,I firmly believe that cultural exchange is the only way to achieve sincere friendship and win-win cooperation between China and Zimbabwe.

In 2014,I co-founded the Zimbabwe Overseas Chinese Federation. At that time, talent shows were popular around the world,so we decided to launch Zimbabwe Dream Star. There were only about 2,000 Chinese people in Zimbabwe back then,so we invited local artists,Thai residents and people from all walks of life to join the show.

Up to now,we have held ten seasons of the program. Many outstanding artists such as Fusion Five, Nyasha David and Mwenje Mathole have risen to fame through this platform. We have organized ten groups, totaling 300 Zimbabwean artists,to visit China for cultural exchanges since 2014.The third group will travel to China this October.

Naasha David used to be a computer science student at Midlands State University. Now he is a top local singer. One of his songs recently ranked number one on Star FM,and he earns a good income from performances. This program empowers young artists and showcases the charm of traditional culture, creating a wonderful cultural resonance between our two countries.

When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2020,Zimbabwe faced severe economic challenges. Many companies closed down, people lost their jobs, and students could not afford tuition fees. From 2021 to 2023,we ran the China-Zimbabwe Friendship Scholarship program to help students from Confucius Institutes continue their studies. We also funded 200 students from 20 public schools in Harare, covering their tuition fees during the pandemic. The scholarship program was suspended in 2024.

To further promote cross-cultural communication,we cooperated with Tsinghua University to launch the Harare Africa Forum in 2024.This year marks its third session. We will invite around 60 scholars from China and other countries to discuss cross-cultural communication and international mutual understanding. We welcome all of you to take part.

I have never had labor disputes with my employees in thirty years of running businesses here. This is all because I respect and understand Zimbabwe's culture. We have no conflicts over overtime work, holidays, leave or work uniforms. Many employees have stayed with me for more than a decade.

Edgar Sanyanga started working for me when he was still in high school, and now he holds two master's degrees and is one of the most senior local staff members. My chief accountant was once a tea server and a single mother raising two children.I encouraged her to pursue further education, and now she has a master's degree in accounting and takes charge of all financial work.

Edgar Sanyanga

We respect each other at work, and we get along like a family after work.My employees share their happy life stories with me,and I also help the next generation of local young people go to China for further education.Education and cultural communication have brought us endless rewards.

Last week,we held a training workshop on labor laws and human resources management for the local Chinese community. Some people accuse Chinese employers of mistreating local workers,so we help overseas Chinese understand local laws and cultural norms to achieve better cooperation.

I co-founded the China-Zimbabwe Exchange Center in 2015.It is currently the only NGO founded by Chinese people in Zimbabwe, dedicated to serving the local Chinese community and promoting bilateral exchanges.

I will share two typical cases caused by cultural and legal misunderstandings.A local gardener who had worked for a Chinese company for many years decided to retire.According to local labor laws,he was entitled to a compensation of 3,000 US dollars. The boss was grateful for his years of service and voluntarily paid him 6,000 US dollars, but they did not sign any written agreement.A week later, the gardener hired a lawyer and filed a claim for additional allowances.

In another case,an employee stole money and goods from a company and was caught by the police. The boss pitied him for his family and withdrew the lawsuit, only to be sued by the employee for labor compensation soon after.

These incidents remind us that both Chinese people and local Zimbabweans need to learn about each other's culture and laws. This is one of the key tasks of our exchange center

Looking Ahead:Investment and Development

Zimbabwe is rich in natural resources and urgently needs foreign investment and advanced technology to create more jobs for young people.Just like China, which protected domestic industries and gradually opened up to foreign investment during its economic reform in the 1980s,Zimbabwe currently restricts foreign investment in 21 industrial sectors.

However, overly strict restrictions willhinder development. For example, local small-scale gold miners cannot cooperate with foreign investors under current laws, which require extremely high asset certification. As a result, local miners can only use primitive mining methods due to a lack of funds and equipment.

China achieved technological progress and economic development through decades of introducing foreign investment and technology transfer.Zimbabwe can learn from this experience and adopt more flexible policies to attract investment.

In conclusion, cultural mutual understanding is essential for both sides.Chinese people need to learn Zimbabwean culture, and Zimbabweans also need to learn Chinese culture. All of you teachers play a vital role in cultural inheritance and communication. With joint efforts,Zimbabwe will surely achieve greater development and excel not only in Africa but also across the world.

2.When you teach students about China, what words and perspectives do you use to introduce the country?

First,China is a country with a 5,000-year-long splendid civilization and profound culture.Second, China is a peace-loving nation.Throughout history,China has never taken the initiative to launch wars. We focus on national development and self-improvement.Zimbabwe can learn from China's development philosophy.Third, the Chinese people are kind and respectful to others.

You can guide students to think:why has a country with a long history and strong strength always stayed committed to peace? The answer lies in our culture:we value family unity, focus on national construction, and never covet what does not belong to us.

Here is a typical cultural example:in Chinese culture, you should never give a man a green hat as a gift. For hundreds of years,a green hat has been a symbol implying that a man's wife is unfaithful. This is a cultural taboo that all Chinese people respect.

As teachers,we should also cultivate students'global citizenship.Learning Chinese does not mean students have to go to China. With language and cultural knowledge, they can gain more opportunities and interact better in a globalized world, even if they work in other African countries like South Africa.

My daughter graduated from Yale University. One of her Zimbabwean classmates in the MBA program was extremely intelligent.Every young person has great potential. As teachers, you should plant positive seeds in students'hearts, build their confidence, and help them take pride in being Zimbabweans.Do not limit their possibilities.

3.Could you arrange more visits from Chinese people to our schools?Students only interact with Chinese teachers now,and they rarely meet other Chinese people.

Prof Li:We can definitely arrange this.We have organized regular school visits before. We visited Marchwood School recently, and we willgo to First Choice School next Friday, followed by Irene School .We arrange such activities almost every month.

We can also organize group tours for teachers and students to visit Chinese factories, offices, traditional Chinese medicine centers and mines,so everyone can see the technology transfer and cooperation projects between China and Zimbabwe.

If teachers communicate with school principals and organize students well,we are happy to assist you in holding Chinese Culture Days and cultural exhibitions. We can display Chinese facial masks, traditional costumes and other cultural elements for students to experience.

That's all for today's Q&A.Thank you again for the wonderful sharing,Mr.Zhao.We have gained a lot today.I know everyone has enjoyed today's lecture, and we will invite Mr.Zhao to deliver another speech next time when the opportunity arises..Thank you all for attending!
