My Chinese Journey
My name is Cebolenkosi Hlongwane, and my Chinese name is 宁静. My journey of studying Chinese began in 2021 when I enrolled at Hillside Teachers' College, which had been introduced just a year prior. It all started with curiosity about the language and a desire to explore something different, a curiosity that later became my sole interest as I enjoyed learning and discovering more about Chinese characters and Chinese culture through studying the language. Today I’m excited to share my experience of learning Chinese, a journey that is both challenging and fascinating.
我叫Cebolenkosi Hlongwane，我的中文名字叫宁静。我学习中文的旅程始于2021年，那时我进入了Hillside Teacher's College，而中文课程正是在一年前刚刚引入的。起初，我只是出于对这门语言的好奇，想要探索一些不同的东西。然而，这份好奇后来变成了我唯一的兴趣，因为学习中文，我对汉字和中国文化的兴趣越来越浓厚。今天，我很高兴能与大家分享我学习中文的经历——这是一段既充满挑战又令人着迷的旅程。
When I started Chinese classes, I didn’t plan to enjoy it as much as I did. It came with challenges, and some days were better than others. I wrestled with self-doubt and thoughts of giving up as I could barely pronounce many words, write the characters, and formulate grammatically correct sentences. Fortunately, we had a very patient lecturer, Mr. Tapera, who greatly helped us and was kind enough to encourage us to study hard and believe that we were all capable as long as we put in the effort.
刚开始上中文课的时候，我并没有预想到自己会如此投入。学习过程中遇到了不少困难，有些日子顺利些，有些日子则不然。我曾挣扎在自我怀疑和想要放弃的念头中，因为很多词我几乎发不准音，汉字也写不好，更别提造出语法正确的句子了。幸运的是，我们有一位非常耐心的老师——Mr. Tapera，他给予我们极大的帮助，并总是亲切地鼓励我们要努力学习，相信只要付出努力，我们都能做到。
While I was at Hillside Teachers' College, I managed to complete and pass HSK 3. However, my journey did not end there. In 2025, I applied for a Chinese Government Scholarship and was awarded this scholarship, for which I am very grateful. It was something I had always hoped for, a priceless opportunity to further my Chinese language studies in China. I strongly believe that when learning a foreign language, the environment is as important as the learning itself, because I am able to learn from locals and immerse myself in the language and culture.
在Hillside Teacher's College学习期间，我成功学完并通过了HSK三级考试。但我的旅程并未就此结束。2025年，我申请了中国政府奖学金，并很荣幸地获得了这一奖项。这是我一直以来的愿望，一个能让我在中国继续深造中文的宝贵机会。我深信，在学习外语时，语言环境与学习本身同样重要，因为我可以向当地人学习，让自己沉浸在语言和文化之中。
The journey has been a rollercoaster. When I first arrived in China, I faced the challenge of communication due to the language barrier, but over time, I managed to make friends who helped me learn and practice, as we always converse in Chinese. I now enjoy and experience milestones such as holding basic conversations, placing orders in restaurants, and understanding simple texts as I continue to read.
这段经历就像坐过山车一样跌宕起伏。刚到中国时，由于语言障碍，我在沟通上遇到了挑战。但随着时间的推移，我结识了一些朋友，他们帮助我学习和练习，因为我们总是用中文交谈。如今，我已经能享受并体验到一些阶段性的成果，比如进行基本的对话、在餐厅点餐，以及在不断阅读中理解简单的文本。
I am currently studying at Beijing International Studies University for my Chinese foundation year and will move to Tianjin University, where I’ll pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese Language. When I started classes, I had an advantage because I already had some basic knowledge of Chinese, but the first days were still humbling since the teacher didn’t explain in English, so we were forced to listen attentively and understand, which really helped with our listening skills. We have wonderful teachers who are patient and consistently encourage us to study hard.
我目前在北京第二外国语学院攻读中文预科，之后将前往天津大学攻读汉语言文学学士学位。刚开始上课时，因为已经有一些中文基础，我具备一定的优势。但最初的几天还是让我意识到自己的不足，因为老师不用英语解释，我们只能全神贯注地听讲并理解，这实际上非常有助于提高我们的听力。我们有很棒的老师，他们很有耐心，并一直鼓励我们努力学习。
During my time at BISU, I attended a school-organized Beijing Peking Opera performance, which I found very interesting. During the New Year celebrations, I joined my class choir team, and we had the privilege of performing a Chinese song in front of the entire school. I also participated in a Chinese writing competition in which I came in second and was awarded a certificate. I also received a certificate in the previous semester for a rising student in terms of academic performance.
在二外期间，我参加了一场学校组织的北京京剧表演，觉得非常有趣。在庆祝新年时，我加入了班级的合唱队，并有幸在全场师生面前演唱了一首中文歌曲。我还参加了一次中文写作比赛，获得了第二名，并得到了一张证书。上学期，我还因学业进步显著而获得了一张荣誉证书。
I really enjoy staying in China and studying the Chinese language; it has been truly enlightening and fulfilling. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me as I continue to advance my studies in this beautiful country. I will forever carry the curiosity that sparked my journey, persevere through challenges, and continue to deepen my Chinese language skills as I move from BISU to Tianjin University and beyond, sharing the richness of Chinese culture with others along the way.
我非常享受在中国的生活和学习，这段经历让我受益匪浅，也倍感充实。我迫不及待地想看看未来会怎样，我将在这个美丽的国家继续深造。我将永远怀揣当初开启这段旅程的那份好奇心，坚持不懈地克服挑战，并在我从二外走向天津大学乃至更远的地方的过程中，不断深化我的中文能力，同时与沿途的人们分享中国文化的丰富内涵。
