“汉语桥”夏令营（1）｜我在中国“没有冬天的岛屿”的经历

My unforgettable Cultural Adventure in an “Island without winter” in China.
I had a unique opportunity to take part in a two-weeks Chinese Bridge Summer Camp from 14-25 April 2025. It was an immersive language and cultural exchange program held at Hainan University, Haikou City in Hainan province famously known as the "Island Without Winter," because of its warm temperatures. This opportunity not only deepened my understanding of the Chinese language but also expanded my worldview through vivid encounters with China's rich history, art, and modern society.
2025年4月14日至25日，我有幸参加了为期两周的“汉语桥”夏令营。这是一项沉浸式的语言与文化交流项目，活动在中国海南省海口市的海南大学举行。海南因其温暖的气候被誉为“没有冬天的岛屿”。这次夏令营不仅加深了我对中文的理解，也通过与中国丰富的历史、艺术和现代社会的近距离接触，拓宽了我的视野。
One of the most eye-opening experiences was our visit to the Hainan Provincial Museum. The museum houses an extraordinary collection of cultural relics that narrate the island’s unique identity—from its Li and Miao ethnic groups to its maritime legacy. Walking through its exhibits was like stepping through a timeline of civilization. The ancient pottery, traditional clothing, and historical artifacts helped us grasp the depth of China's diverse heritage and the resilience of its people. I managed to shoot many pictures that tell the Chinese history.
活动中让我印象最深刻的是参观海南省博物馆。馆内珍藏了大量讲述海南独特文化的文物，从黎族、苗族的传统文化到其海洋文明的遗产，应有尽有。漫步展厅，如同穿越文明的长河。古代陶器、民族服饰和历史遗迹使我更深刻地体会到中国文化的多样性和中华民族的坚韧精神。我还拍下了许多照片，记录这些珍贵的历史瞬间。

Another enjoyable part of the camp was traditional Chinese painting. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, we painted delicate hand fans and expressive face masks, each stroke bringing us closer to understanding the aesthetics and symbolism in Chinese art. Painting on silk fans required patience and a steady hand, while mask painting allowed for creativity and cultural expression. Through this activity, I discovered how art is not just decorative in China but it tells stories, represents identities, and preserves heritage.
夏令营中另一项令人愉快的活动是中国传统绘画。在专业老师的指导下，我们亲手绘制了精美的团扇和富有表现力的脸谱。绘制团扇时需要专注和耐心，而脸谱绘画则给我们提供了创意表达的空间。这次体验让我认识到，中国的艺术不仅仅是装饰，更是一种讲故事、体现身份、传承文化的方式。

A particularly fascinating lesson was about delving into the origin of Chinese characters and learning how to write them. We explored how ancient symbols evolved into the characters used today, many of which are based on pictographs or ideas rooted in nature and daily life. Practicing calligraphy with a brush and ink allowed me to appreciate the balance, precision, and artistic beauty that writing in Chinese demands. It was a powerful reminder that language is more than communication but a bridge to understanding a civilization’s worldview.
让我特别着迷的一课是学习汉字的起源以及如何书写。我们探索了古代象形文字如何演变为今天的汉字，许多字源于自然或日常生活中的图形或理念。在毛笔与墨汁的书写练习中，我感受到汉字所蕴含的平衡、精致和艺术之美。这不仅是一种沟通方式，更是一扇了解中华文明世界观的桥梁。

Introduction to Chinese clay design was another remarkable experience, where we created miniature clay pots and several creatures. Using traditional tools and techniques, we molded and shaped soft clay into beautiful and meaningful forms. I crafted two small pots inspired by ancient styles, and even sculpted a clay fish, a creature rich in cultural significance. This process taught me the importance of craftsmanship in Chinese history, how each pot, each figure, reflects generations of knowledge, utility, and art. I didn’t know that I was this talented until I produced something tangible.
中国传统泥塑也是一项令人难忘的体验。我们用传统工具和技巧，制作了迷你陶罐和小动物。我做了两个受古代风格启发的小罐，还捏了一条鱼——这种动物在中国文化中象征着吉祥与繁荣。通过这个过程，我深刻体会到中国工艺的独特魅力——每一个陶器和雕塑都承载着代代相传的智慧、实用与美学。我没想到自己还有这方面的天赋，直到亲手创作出了成品。

One of the most delightful aspects of my stay in China was experiencing the traditional flavorful dishes and mouth-watering hotpot. Every meal introduced me to new textures, spices, and regional dishes that were both comforting and exciting. A highlight was the hot pot experience, a popular Chinese dining tradition where we gathered around a simmering pot of broth, cooking fresh vegetables, thin slices of meat, tofu, and noodles right at the table. It was more than just a meal; it was a shared experience full of laughter, conversation, and cultural bonding. The warmth of the hot pot not only satisfied our appetites but also brought us closer together, making it a truly memorable part of my cultural journey.
在中国期间，我最享受的还有美食，尤其是风味独特的传统菜肴和令人垂涎的火锅。每一餐都带来新的口感、新的调料和来自不同地区的美味。最难忘的是火锅体验。我们围坐在热气腾腾的锅边，将蔬菜、肉片、豆腐和面条放入锅中现煮，边吃边聊，欢声笑语不断。这不仅是一顿饭，更是一种文化的分享，让我们在温暖与喜悦中拉近了彼此的距离。

The Hot Pot

Equally inspiring was our tour of the Hainan Provincial Library. A haven of knowledge and architectural elegance, the library stands as a testament to China’s investment in education and public access to information. With its vast digital and physical collections, quiet study spaces, and cutting-edge facilities, the library offered us a glimpse into modern Chinese academic life. It was more than a place to read—it was a space for intellectual growth and cultural connection. I really enjoyed touring the library from its first floor to the last one.
同样令我感动的还有对海南省图书馆的参观。这座建筑优雅、藏书丰富的图书馆，是中国重视教育与信息公开的象征。馆内既有实体书籍，也有大量的数字资源，设有安静的学习空间和先进的设施，让我们一窥现代中国的学术生活。这不仅是阅读的空间，更是一个促进知识成长与文化交流的场所。我从一楼一直参观到顶楼，十分享受整个过程。

To sum up, my participation in the Chinese Bridge Summer Camp at Hainan University has left some foot prints on me. Every part of the journey was a learning moment. From exploring historic sites and engaging in cultural workshops to making new international friendships, every moment contributed to my personal and academic growth. While I have highlighted only a few key experiences such as visiting the provincial museum and library, learning calligraphy, and enjoying hot pot—there were many other meaningful moments that time and space could not allow me to include. This journey has not only deepened my understanding of the Chinese language and culture but also strengthened my appreciation for cultural exchange and global learning.
总的来说，参加海南大学的“汉语桥”夏令营，在我心中留下了深深的印记。这段旅程中的每一刻，都是宝贵的学习时光。从参观历史遗址、参与文化体验，到结交来自世界各地的新朋友，每一步都让我在个人成长与学术探索上收获良多。虽然我这里只分享了部分经历，如参观博物馆与图书馆、学习书法和体验火锅，但还有很多精彩的瞬间难以一一列举。这次文化之旅，不仅加深了我对中文和中国文化的理解，也让我更加珍视文化交流与全球学习的意义。
