On 2 October, the cultural exchange event “Walking between China and Africa: China-Zimbabwe Youth Face-to-Face”, jointly organized by The China-Africa Joint Research Centre for Exchanges and Mutual Learning between Civilizations (CAJRC & CIUZ) and the Institute of Chinese Civilization, Renmin University of China, was held at the CIUZ. A delegation from Renmin University of China’s “Ren” Global: Enhancing Students’ Global Competence Programme, comprising 12 students and 2 faculty members, engaged in face-to-face dialogue with students and faculty members from the University of Zimbabwe on topics including China-Zimbabwe relations, youth friendship and intercultural exchange.

The event officially began at 2:00 p.m. The choir of the CIUZ welcomed the visiting students and faculty from Renmin University of China with a musical performance, after which host Shoko announced the opening of the event and delivered a welcome address. Students from both sides then introduced themselves in turn, sharing their fields of study, interests and hobbies, campus life and personal experiences, which quickly helped bring the two groups closer together.

Dr. Liao Yue, Deputy Director of the China-Africa Joint Research Centre, expressed his appreciation for the warm reception extended by the Harare Station of the Centre and shared his impressions of the visit. He noted that Zimbabwe’s emphasis on education and its multilingual social environment had left a strong impression on him. He expressed hope for deeper cooperation with the Centre in the future to create more opportunities for exchanges between Chinese and Zimbabwean youth, and wished lasting friendship between the two countries.

During the thematic sharing session, Zimbabwean students Blessing Nhetekwa and Panashe Makaki delivered a presentation entitled “Young People and Zimbabwe-China Relations: Opportunities, Concerns and the Role of Youth”. From a youth perspective, they explored the impact of China-Zimbabwe relations on young people in Zimbabwe in areas including trade, education, culture, science and technology, and infrastructure. They highlighted opportunities related to Chinese language learning, scholarships, cultural exchange, employment and entrepreneurship, while also drawing attention to issues such as employment, skills transfer and cultural identity. They argued that young people should move beyond being beneficiaries of the outcomes of cooperation and become active participants and builders by learning Chinese and developing international skills, engaging in academic and cultural exchanges, pursuing entrepreneurial cooperation, promoting technological innovation and fostering open dialogue. In doing so, they can serve as an important bridge between China and Zimbabwe.

The two sides continued their discussion, particularly on Chinese language learning and youth employment. Zhu Yue, a volunteer teacher at the CIUZ, noted that Chinese language proficiency could broaden career development opportunities for young people in Zimbabwe. CIUZ teacher Shoko emphasized that language skills are an important key for young people seeking to enter a wider range of professional fields. Associate Professor Li Liqin, Director of the Centre, pointed out that language barriers remain a practical challenge in cooperation between Chinese and Zimbabwean enterprises, while many Chinese companies are willing to employ well-educated University of Zimbabwe graduates with strong professional and personal qualities. At present, the CIUZ is also continuing to develop long-term Chinese language programmes, creating better conditions for the training of more Chinese-speaking professionals.

Ling Han, an undergraduate student at the School of International Studies, Renmin University of China, reflected in his thematic presentation on his experience of learning about Zimbabwean history through activities such as Model United Nations. He noted that the shared historical memories formed through national independence and the struggle against colonialism have provided an important foundation for exchanges between young people from the two countries today. He emphasized that youth exchange should go beyond the acquisition of knowledge and should enable young people to genuinely understand one another through exchange programmes, cultural experiences, arts and sports. Music, sports and art can transcend linguistic and cultural differences and connect people from diverse backgrounds. Quoting Mao Zedong’s message to young people, “The world is yours, as well as ours, but in the last analysis, it is yours,” Ling Han said that young people in both China and Zimbabwe share the responsibility of strengthening friendship between the two countries and should deepen mutual understanding through genuine communication and action.

Wang Yuexin, a doctoral student at the School of Environment, Renmin University of China, approached the discussion from the shared global challenge of climate change. Although China and Zimbabwe are geographically distant from each other, he noted that young people in both countries face common challenges confronting humanity and share the aspiration for a better life. He also discussed the applications of artificial intelligence in learning and everyday life, which resonated strongly with students from both sides. He observed that although exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations may appear to be a broad and far-reaching topic, they ultimately depend on the participation of individuals. With the development of the internet and artificial intelligence, intercultural communication will have increasingly diverse and accessible forms.

During the open discussion session, students from both sides engaged in lively conversations about campus life, cultural differences, learning experiences and other issues of common concern to young people. Different backgrounds gave rise to different perspectives, while face-to-face interaction made previously unfamiliar cultures more tangible and approachable. The atmosphere was lively and engaging throughout the session.

The students then jointly visited an exhibition on the history and development of Renmin University of China, learning more about the university’s educational history, traditions and campus culture through photographs and written materials. The visit also provided an opportunity for students from both sides to exchange views on their respective educational environments and personal experiences of growing up.

At the conclusion of the event, the young participants from both sides sang the anthem of Renmin University of China together. As Renmin University of China will celebrate its 90th anniversary next year, young people from different countries in Harare offered their early best wishes to the university through song, leaving behind a warm and memorable moment of exchange. Even after the official conclusion of the event, the participants remained engaged in conversation and group photographs, extending their cross-border dialogue in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Different cultural backgrounds bring different ways of observing and expressing the world. Sincere dialogue allows people to see and appreciate their differences, while shared experiences of youth, learning and personal growth can become a bridge of mutual understanding. Although the “China-Zimbabwe Youth Face-to-Face” event came to an end amid music and laughter, the dialogue among young people continues. In the future, the CAJRC will continue to build platforms for youth exchange, promote greater mutual understanding between Chinese and Zimbabwean youth through mutual learning, and encourage more young people to become participants, practitioners and witnesses of exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese and African civilizations.
